In the Basildon & Billericay U3A the majority of learning groups meet in homes. This means that of necessity the groups are small, usually around twelve people. This seems to work for our U3A, proving a more friendly and easier learning atmosphere. There are, of course, some groups that meet in public rooms and halls. This is usually due to large numbers, lack of house space, or equipment needed. Each group is autonomous. They learn together as a team. There is usually a designated "Leader". They may be a Tutor, a Coordinator or an organiser. They are all volunteers and do not necessarily have any teaching experience Some groups are structured, e.g. Languages, others have a more relaxed approach, e.g. Poetry appreciation The variation in groups is enormous, from IT subjects to morning rambles and a pub lunch. Many "groups" do not have a regular meeting time or venue. The Travel group and the Town & Country Walks group are examples. All groups are in charge of their own learning and primarily it is for fun and personal satisfaction. Our members enjoy their groups so much that they even arrange social meetings outside the normal learning groups, Jazz evenings, Pub lunches, Quizzes are some of those on the current agenda. |
